Dr. Lai Zhi Visits Hong Kong to Share Expertise: In-Depth Insights on Farm Biosecurity and Disease Prevention to Support Sustainable Swine Production

About the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD):
The Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government is responsible for regulating and promoting local fisheries, agriculture, and nature conservation. The department is committed to ensuring the safety and quality of agricultural products and advancing the sustainable development of the agricultural sector.

November 14, 2025 — At the invitation of the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD) of the Hong Kong SAR Government, Dr. Lai Zhi from our company visited Hong Kong today to conduct an in-depth technical exchange with local swine producers, representatives from the City University of Hong Kong’s veterinary team, and other industry stakeholders.

The session focused on the development of swine farm biosecurity systems, as well as the diagnosis and integrated prevention of major swine diseases.

Dozens of pig farmers actively participated, creating a highly engaging atmosphere throughout the event. The strong turnout reflects the industry’s growing urgency to strengthen herd health management and improve disease prevention and control capabilities.

During the exchange session, Dr. Lai Zhi combined theory with hands-on experience to provide an in-depth analysis of the core challenges faced by modern large-scale swine farms in building effective biosecurity systems. He systematically explained key measures such as establishing physical barriers, optimizing management workflows, and standardizing staff operating procedures.

He also offered detailed interpretations and case analyses on the clinical signs of major swine diseases, essential points in laboratory diagnostics, the latest prevention and control technologies, and practical vaccine applications.

Dr. Lai emphasized: “A sound biosecurity system is the foundation for the survival and development of any swine farm. Accurate and timely diagnosis is the prerequisite for effective disease control. We must adhere to the principle of ‘prevention first and integrated control,’ combining scientific farm management, strict biosecurity measures, and well-designed immunization programs.”

During the Q&A session, representatives from Hong Kong’s Kin Lian Group, veterinary researchers from City University of Hong Kong, and local pig farmers raised practical questions on topics such as surveillance of major diseases including African swine fever, differential diagnosis of respiratory and gastrointestinal diseases, vaccine selection and immunization program optimization, and pathogen reduction in farm environments.

Representatives from the AFCD and the CityU veterinary team remarked that high-level professional exchanges of this kind are crucial for strengthening the overall biosecurity standards and disease prevention capabilities of Hong Kong’s swine industry.

This event not only delivered cutting-edge knowledge and practical experience to Hong Kong’s swine producers, but also established a platform for industry–academia–research collaboration. It will help drive the local swine industry toward healthier, safer, and more sustainable development.
